But my lunchtime the sun had burnt off most of the clouds and we had a glorious afternoon. The little line runs from Embsay (near Skipton) to Bolton Abbey through some fabulous scenery. There is a passing loop at Stoneacre. There is no connection to the outside world of Network rail (a gap of a hundred yards??). It needs connecting!! No 36 which developed a fault during the afternoon D2203 which ran flawlessly 08773 which failed during the morning 08054 (non runner) D9513 which ran well but needed some attention in the afternoon 31119 which looked great in Railfreight colours 31435 (D5600) which ran all day 37294 which ran all day but did develop a changeover switch fault (but it was just mucky!) 47004 which performed well Monday 27 July 2009: The July 2009 Diesel Gala got off to a slow start as the weather wasn't great on the Saturday. I had to go to Stoke on business so I decided to drop in to Cheddleton to have a look (the third thing was Buxton elsewhere on this site!). The folks were friendly so after a donation to the cause I had a wander. Its a nice little railway through some Staffordshire countryside. They operate on a section of the old Macclesfield to Uttoxeter route and latterly saw sand trains from Oakamoor. There are some nice structures on the line. A very splendid 37075 stands with stock in Cheddleton Station. The two other 37s are stored at Oakamoor at the moment. 33102 having some attention to its bodywork 47524 in RES colours is under restoration. The Yorkshire/BTH 0-6-0 stands in the yard beside the Southern EMU set. The 0-6-0 diesel. A very smart No6 D2334 stands in the yard. A nicely restored 2car DMU The DMU again. A contrast in designs. There are a few scanned slides taken using my trusty FM2 and some inside the shed were taken with a smaller Nikon 4Mp compact. Locos in use were: Deltic 9009 and 9019 1015 Western Champion Class 37 D6700 Class 25 D7628 and Class 46 D182. Apparantly a pair of 20s were to be running but they couldn't make it! So they added another Deltic! A fab day with superb lighting. I should add that if engine sounds were ranked in order of "thrillingness" the Napier Deltic engine would be second, the Western Maybach third and the Avro Lancaster FIRST! The Western thunders south through Beck Hole with a southbound D182 rounds the curve at Beck Hole with a train for Grosmont. D6700 trundles the finely assembled demo freight through Beck Hole. The 25 chugs away from Pickering with one of the first trains. The 25 passes D6700 on the frieght at Goathland. The 25 passes under the very fine signal at Goathland. 55009 heads south towards pickering. D182 heads north 1015 makes a very fine sight heading the demo freight towards Levisham. D182 on another northbound. 55019 stands at Goathland with a train for Pickering. D6700 rounds the curve at Fen Bog with a train for Pickering 55009 heads north towards Goathland. The 3car Class 101 set worked the Grosmont to Goathland shuttles 55009 works the demo freight into Goathland D182 with the steam generator working eases into Levisham with the dining train. ]]> Sat Jul 18 2009 Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway Diesel Gala http://preservation.picturebook.org.uk/c1725201.html The GWSR held its summer diesel gala and vintage bus raleigh this weekend and it was a well organised event. These photos were taken on Sunday 12th July. I don't think there were enough people attending compared to the Waddington airshow the previous weekend. The vintage buses were interesting. The GWSR runs from Toddington to Cheltenham Racecourse station through some beautiful countryside. The line was originally a Great Western Line from Cheltenham to Stratford running through some splendid countryside. The GWSR are rebuilding the section from Toddington north to Broadway. A bit of the original line survives between HoneyBourne and Long Marston (site of an old MOD depot now used for storing rolling stock). There are some good photo locations and photographers had the chance to go lineside with their camera if they had a hi-vis vest and paid a £10 fee. Its a long way to go but I think it was worth it! In action at the gala: Class 02 D2860 on brake van rides with the Southern bogie van Class 04 11230 (static) 20137, 20154 24081 31162 33109 37324(099), 37215 47105, 47376 All the diesels were immaculate. The 20s or 'choppers' looked superb running as a pair! Its been the best diesel gala I have attended yet! Maybe just beating ELR's March gala?? The Toddington to Cheltenham (Racecourse) line is a great line to travel and photograph. Track has now been laid towards Laverton (on the Broadway extension). And got toasted in the process! My favourites were the Antanov AN2 and the Vulcan bomber! Forgive my ignorance (I did spend my youth building Airfix kits of military aircraft) at not knowing much about these aircraft. I do like anything that is big and makes a noise! I am using the program to add 'name to faces' as it were. There was a lot to do and see. I couldn't get everything in but I was very impressed with the day. I hope that in 5 years time we can catch the train from Matlock to Bakewell (connection with NR should be complete by the new year). And excursions from afar dropping off hundreds of visitors at Bakewell. Imagine 67s T&T at Bakewell! Can't imagine D8 crossing the viaduct at Miller's Dale!! Yet! Manged to snap a few of Tornado!

This little engine brought in the ECS for the 9am departure from Pickering. Steaming uphill at Fen Bog Sir Nigel rolls downhill at Fen Bog chasing a cloud! D6700 heads north with the Teak set at Fen Bog. Sir Nigel departs Goathland 63395 works hard pulling into Goathland 75029 tailing the Black Five and 63395 about to depart Goathland. British Railways Sir Nigel with the Teak set entering Levisham. 63395 races south towards Newtondale Halt in the late afternoon sun. 75029 and 63395 at Goathland. 63395 departs Goathland without the sun! Against a stormy sky 49395 steams uphill at Moorgates. Departing Levisham 60007 heads towards Pickering with the Teak set. 9th May 2009 At Levisham 75029 waits for Tornado to clear the section. 9th May 2009 60163 at Grosmont running round its train for the 1230 departure to Pickering. 9th May 2009 60163 picks up a GWR observation coach. 9th May 2009 A fine collection of semaphores. 60163 collects a GWR observation coach. 9th May 60163 shoves the coach into platform 2 prior to departure with the 1230 to Pickering. 9th May 60163 shoves the coach into platform 2. 60163 has picked up a GWR observation coach and is preparing to depart. 9th May 2009 60163 departs Grosmont with the 1230 departure. 60163 makes a very fine sight! Sir Nige pulls the ecs into Grosmont station. 9th May 60007 rests at Grosmont with a departure for Pickering. 9th May The day's work is done and T2 63395 pushes its Teak set out of Pickering and into the siding for the night. 9th May 2009
